The Mohawk Valley Men's Soccer team beat #2 ranked Genesee Community College 2-1 in double overtime on Saturday afternoon in Batavia, NY. GCC struck first only 53 seconds into the game when Hiago Barros de Souza played a long ball over the top in transition to Vitor Chriguer de Goes Vieiera who slotted home the breakaway to go up 1-0. With less than 2 minutes remaining in the 1st half, Romaine Watkis stepped up and buried home a free kick from 25 yards out to tie the game up at 1-1 heading into halftime. The second half continued to be a back and forth game until Abdi Osman received his second yellow card which resulted in a red which put the Hawks down to only 10 men for the remainder of the game. The Hawks were able to keep their opponents scoreless for the remainder of the 2nd half forcing the game into overtime. The Hawks continued to battle and also found opportunities during the first overtime period but could not beat GCC goalkeeper Adrian Bergman. With the second overtime underway, Kevin Griffith combined with Romaine Watkis who muscled off a defender and went in to score a breakaway with 8:50 remaining in the second overtime.
Mohawk Valley Community College goalkeeper Stuart Boller finished the game with 9 saves as his counter-part Adrian Bergman finished the game with 6 saves. GCC held a 20-11 shot advantage with a 10-8 shot advantage on goal. Each team finished the game with 4 corner kicks. The Hawks recorded 7 fouls on the game which resulted in 6 yellow cards as the Cougars recorded 3 fouls which resulted in 1 yellow card.
MVCC moves on to 3-0 as GCC drops to 2-1. The Hawks return to action on Wednesday when they travel to SUNY Broome for a 2:00pm kickoff.
