The Mohawk Valley Community College Lady Hawks are headed back to a familiar place: the NJCAA National Championships, following an 88-66 win over #1 seed Onondaga Community College in the Region III championship in Syracuse.
After a slow start for both teams, the Hawks jumped out to an early lead before the Lazers tied it back up at 17. MVCC then went on a 5-0 run and never looked back as Tournament MVP Jhontay Giles put the Hawks on her back and led MV into the locker room with a 38-25 lead.
The Hawks opened the second half on a run and pushed the lead to 18 points before Onondaga started to crawl back into the contest. OCC went on a 13-7 run to get within 69-60 but key baskets by Stevie Ray and Giles put the Hawks back in the drivers seats. MVCC went on a 19-3 run over the final four minutes to seal the victory and earn a trip to the National Tourney in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
Giles led MV with a game-high 31 points and 18 rebounds. Joining Giles on the All-Tournament Team were Stevie Ray (24 points) and Imani Pierce (13 points).
MVCC improved to 28-3 with the win.
