The No. 3 seed MVCC Lady Hawks defeated No. 6 seed Anoka Ramsey Community College 65-54 to advance to the semifinals of the NJCAA Division III Women's National Basketball Tourney.
Anoka Ramsey opened the game on a 12-1 run before MVCC went on their own 12-1 spurt over the final four minutes to tie the game 13-13 after one quarter.
Lillybeth Garcia's three point basket and Cheyenne Clark's lay-up put MVCC up 18-15 early in the second quarter. Both teams continued to trade baskets as MVCC, led by Adrienne Graves 9 first half points, took a 33-28 lead into the locker room.
The Golden Rams scored the first five points of the third quarter to tie the game up at 33 before Africa Williams three pointer put the Hawks in the lead for good at 36-33. Williams, who had 13 points in the third quarter, hit another three midway through the period as MV extended their lead to 42-35. The Hawks closed out the quarter on a 8-0 run and a 15 point advantage after three.
Africa Williams finished with 16 points and Graves scored 15 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Chelsea Gibson and Garcia each finished the game with 8 points. Cheyenne Clark added 9 rebounds in the win.
Mohawk Valley will play the No. 2 seed Northland at 7 p.m. Friday to play for a spot in Saturday's National Championship Game. You can watch the game live at www.njcaatv.org or follow the tournament online here.
