Mohawk Valley, NY – The Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC) baseball team kicked off its season with a grueling six-game, three-day road stretch, culminating in a doubleheader split at Onondaga Community College. The Hawks showed resilience in their season opener, securing a 6-3 victory in game one before falling 8-1 in game two.
Game One: MVCC 6, Onondaga CC 3
Facing an early deficit, MVCC showcased its fighting spirit, rallying in the sixth inning to take control of the game. Trailing 3-1, the Hawks plated three runs to seize a 4-3 advantage. They extended their lead in the seventh inning when Franklyn Gutierrez delivered a clutch two-RBI hit, sealing the 6-3 victory.
The pitching staff played a crucial role in the win. Ben Petersen stepped up in an emergency relief situation in the second inning, providing a strong performance to stabilize the game. Lucas Komnick delivered a shutdown effort in the sixth, keeping the door closed on Onondaga's offense. Bradee Boughner capped off the game with a dominant 1-2-3 inning in the seventh, securing the win for the Hawks.
Boughner also had an outstanding game at the plate, leading the offensive charge with a three-hit performance, setting the tone for the Hawks' lineup.
Game Two: Onondaga CC 8, MVCC 1
In the second game of the doubleheader, MVCC's bats struggled to generate momentum against Onondaga's left-handed ace, Jesse DeMantenon. DeMantenon kept the Hawks off balance, allowing just four hits over six innings in a dominant outing. MVCC was unable to replicate its late-game magic from the first contest, ultimately falling 8-1.
